Description

Tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s second most common cause of death from an infectious disease despite the availability of drug therapies since the 1950’s and is designated as a WHO global health emergency due to increasing rates of TB infection worldwide and the emergence of multidrug resistance tuberculosis (MDR-TB). We have developed a novel, particle-based drug delivery platform that has been designed to increase drug targeting to the site of TB infection and stimulate the body’s own immune response to fight the Mtb infection. In this project a method for producing these particles on a large scale will be developed. The research therefore will be based on strong links between materials science, engineering design, biological performance and clinical need and the researcher will work closely with members of a multidisciplinary project team in the Advanced Drug Delivery Research Group in the School of Pharmacy, RCSI (http://www.rcsi.ie/school_pharmacy_research) and the TB Immunology Research Group (https://medicine.tcd.ie/research/researchers/joe-keane.php). The post will provide the candidate with a well-supported environment including a multidisciplinary supervisory team, and an opportunity to work closely with industry collaborators, Profector Lifesciences. Candidates will ideally have a PhD in pharmaceutics, bioengineering, materials science or electrochemistry. Experience in electrospray, particle engineering, drug delivery, controlled release mechanisms, cell culture techniques and/or commercialisation of research desirable.
